About the BMW E34 M5:

The E34 M5 arrived in 1988, first launched with the S38B36 6-cylinder engine producing 315bhp. In late 1991, this engine was increased to 3.8 litres with power up to 355bhp. Due to emissions rules, the USA and South Africa were never offered the 3.8 litre engine.

BMW M GmbH hand built the E34 M5 at it’s Garching plant in Germany, in contrast to the standard E34 which was built at BMW’s Dingolfing plant. Shells arrived pre-painted and the car was assembled by a team of M employees over a period of 2 weeks.

Coming from a time where super-saloons were more subtle, the E34 M5 enjoyed only minor cosmetic changes over the standard car. Sports suspension, unique front and rear bumpers and larger alloy wheels gave the car a sporting presence without giving the game away. Early cars had three-piece Style 20 “M-System” wheels, which featured directional bolted-on wheel covers and fin assembly. This didn’t look pretty but back then it was ‘form over function’ and not the other way around… these wheels were designed to assist brake cooling. In 1992 the wheel design changed to the “M-System II”, commonly known as Throwing Stars. Finally, in May 1995, the E34 M5 was treated to the 18-inch “M-Parallel” wheels, which ditched the cooling covers entirely.

Finished in Avus Blue it is interesting for the lack of leather, making it a rare combination for an E34 M5. Instead it features the M Sport cloth interior, which some enthusiasts prefer.

The history file is comprehensive, having had just 4 keepers according to the V5. All of these keeps have cared for the car fastidiously during it’s 123,900 miles. Much work has been done to the car recently, including all discs and pads and suspension bushes, dampers, callipers, a new steering box, clutch assembly, water pump, air conditioning compressor, and drier. It sits on four new Michelin Pilot Sport tyres and 4 wheel alignment has been done by BMW.
